Question: Why would the speedometer stop calculating your speed when driving?

The gauge works fine when I start driving the car but maybe 10 or 12 miles while driving the speedometer slowly starts going back go zero. The movement is not smooth. After the vehicle has been sitting a whileit starts working again. Like going to get lunch. Before I get to my ddestination the gauge is at zero again. Any suggestions on what may be wrong?
