Question: over filing tank?

I was told I over filled my tank..causing it to cut off. There is some sort of carbon filter container that catches over flow of gas???? I've never heard of such a thing..I have 3 other cars never an issue with adding additional fuel to round up dollar amount.. but once pump clicks off you're not suppose to add any more gas..ACCORDING TO KIA GUY at dealership I bought it from.
