Question: Is it my gas tank or fuel lines?

We hit a huge rock and dented the underside of the car. It hit the back end of the gas tank. For the first 3 days we just smelled gas, no leaking noticed and no drop in gas gauge. On day 4 we noticed some gas dripping from the metal guard over the tank but only when the engine is running. If the car is off and sitting there is no new leaking and drop in gas gauge. I had a mechanic lift it up and said it was coming down from the top of the tank but he didn't know if it was the top of the tank cracked or one of the lines but he wasn't set up to or allowed to mess with gas tanks. There are no engine or warning lights on. The gas gauge does drop significantly since the dripping started. Is there a way to tell where the gas is coming from?
