Question: I missed a shift - did I hurt anything?

I was trying to shift from 5th to 4th and grabbed 2nd instead. The car seems to drive OK. Could there be any long term damage?

A missed shift can certainly cause you to float a valve or cause other catastrophic damage inside your engine's valvetrain. However, unless your Mercedes immediately made horrible noises only to end up an a flatbed a few miles down the road, it sounds like you may have dodged a bullet on this one. With the hood open, listen for valve tick to indicate whether your valves need adjusting (I think you car has self-adjusting hydraulic valves, but if things went really far out of whack on the missed shift, they could still be out of adjustment). Other than that, count your lucky stars that it wasn't catastrophic. If it makes you feel any better, we have all dodged this particular bullet at one time or another.
