Question: Do I actually need a new starter ?

2002 corolla, Just had 90,000 inspections ($400) and told everything is good. a week later, had to get a new battery after the 9 years old battery died. This morning, the car did not start b/c I did not turn off the front lights last off night. AAA guy had to giggle the starter to get it to start. I did not mention to AAA guy about left the light on all night. He said I should get starter fixed/replaced. I think problem caused by the front light was on all night, not the starter, right?. I don't need a new car since I use my car very little and want to keep this car going as long as I can. Or you think I should get starter looked at? Note did have inspection a month ago. My car has 97000 miles. My car has an automatic transmission. What is your recommendation to keep this car going.

I never heard of a battery lasting 9 years. 4 to 6 years is average life. With the new battery your car should start right up. If it does not start, you will need a new starter too. But I think your car starts up fine now. Check all your fluids. Are they all clean? Brake fluid should be clear. Transmission fluid is clear red. Coolant should look clear with color. Change motor oil and filter twice a year. Change transmission fluid every 40,000 miles. Do not get the 100% transmission fluid flush. Just have them drop the pan, replace the filter and pan gasket, Then put in new fluid. It is safer for the transmission. The same schedule for coolant (antifreeze) change.
Change brake fluid every 4 years. Change air filter every 30,000 miles. Check air pressure in tires every month. 30 PSI is good tire pressure. Helps mpg too.
