Question: Car won't shift

I was driving and the car was ok stopped at gas station turned car on went to leave and car wouldn't move. It kicked into gear started to drive and it wouldn't move after a couple of seconds. It then kicked in and started to go then stopped again. It did this all the way home. Checked fluid it was fine. Idk if I need new tranny or if it could be something else?? It never gave me any warning
