WRX Bucket Lister!   . . . . .
At 64 years old I have finally become a qualified "Bucket Lister". Having driven practical stick shift Subaru's for the
past 15 years - I came to the realization that given my age - I had better find something to replace the thrill of
off-shore sailing and big mountain skiing - I cannot scale masts any more nor can I bust bumps all day - so, why not
replace those thrills with a WRX? Screw practicality. Seriously. I came to Subaru's 15 years ago in pursuit of cars
that would not hydroplane (I had serious close calls and finally a bad wreck finishing 10 years in FWD cars). Subaru's
Symetrical AWD seriously minimizes hydro problems and is the best thing to happen to winter driving ever. And then ...
in 2009 ... the WRX 5 Door Premium was a car so improved ... compelling ... that I had to have it. I am only at 4,800
miles, but the mileage jumped from 21.9 average to 24.6 at 4,000 on the clock - spirited back road driving - 93 octane.
The engine is just breaking in it seems. There is plenty written elsewhere about performance and handling. It is all
true. I'll just say the cost per (s)mile is the lowest of all sports cars available in the USA. (IMHO). I've read of
transmission issues and having spoken with a 30 year Subaru mechanic about them - they are all operator issues - if you
know how to drive a performance stick shifter you'll have no problems with a WRX. The comfort and ride are excellent -
took a 3 hour ride non-stop up to Portland, Maine 2 weeks ago - had lunch and dead headed 3 hours back. My old bones and
those of my child bride (59 years old) were just fine. The 17" / 225 Summer Performance Dunlops are excellent in season
but I felt it best to add 16" / 205 All Seasons for the Winter... Was a good decision given the snow driving I
encountered (enjoyed). And they are remarkable in dry conditions. So, you should definately "Bucket List" WRX's
beginning with the 2009 models - "ya only go around once"!
